Thinking outside the box with IBI Group

Introducing a shipping box that has sustainability packed into its dna!

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, or at all aware of our social media, you already know that Rightsleeve aims to become a more sustainable company, encouraging our clients to make Earth-smart choices when it comes to their branded merchandise. And we love it when our clients feel the same! Cue our joy when IBI Group, a global architecture, engineering, planning, and technology firm creating the intelligent systems, sustainable buildings, and efficient infrastructure of tomorrow asked us to join them in creating a shipping box that transforms after use into something creative and useful, with the aim of reducing the cardboard waste leftover from kitting projects.

Since 2020, we’ve all seen an increase in the amount of virgin cardboard that comes into our homes with the deliveries we receive on the daily, and IBI wanted to address this issue head-on. We recently sat down with their team to discuss this project, and this is what they had to say:

Hey ibi, We’re in love with this box! What was the motivation behind this project?

From waste to workspace - click to see how it works!

IBI Group strives to find new, creative solutions to being a more sustainable and eco-friendly company. We really wanted to think outside of the box (literally!) on how we could onboard our new employees in a fun, engaging, and sustainable way.

There’s nothing more exciting than getting a package in the mail from your new company with cool, branded items to show off to all of your family, friends and network – but we did not want to just stop there, we wanted the items in these new hire kits to each have a second purpose, and that included the box itself.

From the pencil turning into a basil plant, the welcome card and notebook cover turning into beautiful wild flowers, and lastly the box itself turning into a functional laptop stand, these New Hire Kits provide employees with useful tools for their daily routines as well as sustainable solutions to help build a better future.

So who did you anticipate receiving these boxes?

Our initial target was all new employees joining IBI Group across Canada, which will impact around 600 new employees this year alone! Our intent is to start with our Canadian new hires, and then expand into our other offices globally as we’ve already had interest from those offices as well.

How important was it to consider sustainability for this project?

We really wanted to ensure we were looking at only sustainable options, meaning that majority of the items could be either re-used, re-purposed or re-cycled. Rightsleeve delivered on all of these!

The Solution: What did your Rightsleeve partner provide with respect to originality or creativity?

Everything Rightsleeve provided exceeded our expectations of originality and creativity! Jess Haag was incredible at sourcing all sustainable items and making our vision come to life. She was able to find amazing creative options, such as the pencil with a basil seed capsule that can be planted when the pencil is used up.

Result: How successful was the project?

We have only recently launched these New Hire Kits, so we don’t have the data back yet - but as our global partners have already expressed interest, we anticipate these kits will be a huge success! We’re also partnering with Rightsleeve to promote the box through their Earth Day look book, as well as through IBI Group’s Earth Day social media campaign that will run the month of April.

We look to formally post these kits early May which coincides with our new batch of students joining us for the summer, each of whom will receive the kit. Lastly, we also plan to enter in an internal competition across IBI globally, in which the theme of the competition is to describe an action or initiative that addresses the challenges of climate change.

That sounds amazing! So, my final question is - How was your experience working with Rightsleeve on this project?

We had an incredible experience working with Rightsleeve, and we look forward to creating a partnership to help amplify the creative collaboration between IBI Group and Rightsleeve. We were extremely impressed on the delivery of everything we had asked for to be included in these new hire kits and to help bring to reality converting the box into unique laptops stands.

We’re very excited to share that this box is now available to all Rightsleeve clients, for all your kitting projects! The corrugated material of this box is made from recycled cardboard, and is recyclable, and the box can be printed in full colour, inside and out. Ask our in-house design team to customize the artwork for your project, so you can tell your own sustainability story with every delivery!

Reach out to your Rightsleeve team to add this box to your next kitting project!
